Robert Szczarba, Surface No. I
Robert Szczarba is the Emeritus Percy F. Smith Professor of Mathematics at Yale University. Given his expertise in geometry, it is not surprising that his sculptures have a mathematical flavor. Some of Szczarba's work is displayed in the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale and at the Mathematical Association of America's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Surface No. 1, constructed of steel, was completed in the late 1990s. The sculpture will be on view through May 7 in the lobby of Creative Arts Workshop at 80 Audubon Street.

An Apartment in Florence, Italy, for a Week
Spend a week at this apartment in central Florence, just two blocks from the Piazza Santissima Annunziata and five blocks from the Duomo! The apartment is on the second floor of a gorgeous eighteenth-century palazzo, the Palazzo Capponi. The palazzo has a large and attractive private interior garden. On the street side, the Palazzo faces the Giardino dei Semplici, a lovely botanical garden. A Florence agent who will introduce you to the apartment when you arrive and is available to handle any problems that arise. Please note that the loft bed is only accessible via spiral staircase. Available for one week at a mutually agreed upon time before April 30, 2012.

Puerto Rico Garden Apartment for a Week
Enjoy this fabulous two-bedroom garden terrace unit with a large kitchen and living room and an expansive veranda surrounded by an array of colorful flowers and palms. Villa Los Robles is perched atop a hill with a beautiful view of the ocean, just a 500 foot walk away. Water can be viewed from all four sides of the home: ocean on three sides and a full-sized pool in the backyard. Unit is air conditioned; no smoking or pets.

House for a Week in Little Compton, RI, plus Dinner Out!
Come enjoy this three-bedroom, two-bath Cape with meadow views, just 1.5 miles from the beach! Superb walking, swimming, birding, biking, fishing and just plain relaxing. Available for one week (Saturday to Saturday) in September 2011 - excluding Labor Day weekend. No pets or smoking. While there, take yourself out for dinner at the 1854 Taproom in Little Compton's Stone House - modern comfort food in a rustic coastal setting.

Harold Shapiro, View from under 59th Street Bridge
Harold Shapiro is one of Greater New Haven's most well-known and well-loved photographers. He has been inspiring students at Creative Arts Workshop since 1984 and has served as Head of the Photography Department since 1990. Harold has photographed for many companies, universities and non-profits throughout the region. This 20" x 24" archival pigment print was featured in a recent show at CAW.

Q-Bridge Program Tour
Have a personal presentation and tour of the Q-Bridge for a group of up to 30 people! Meet at the CTDOT office at 424 Chapel Street for a 30 minute presentation on the history of the Program, then take a one-hour tour of the construction of the new bridge. The tour must be scheduled four weeks in advance. Offer expires 6/1/12.

Joyce Greenfield, Inn at the Lodge
This 16" x 20" oil on canvas is inspired by a specific place, but evokes memories of the welcoming and relaxing spaces that each of us knows. Joyce is a member of the CAW Board of Directors. She received her BA from Southern Connecticut State University and studied at Paier College of Art. She exhibits widely.

Phyllis Crowley, Insadded, 2011
This 10.5" x 6.5" archival pigment print captures a highly decorated wall in a small hill town outside Jaipur, India. Phyllis Crowley is a commercial and fine art photographer, as well as a member of the CAW Photography Department. She also teaches at the Norwalk Community College and the University of Bridgeport. She exhibits throughout Connecticut and New York.

Janis Nedela, Typo No. 19
As seen in CAW's 2010 show Inventive Structures: Books Beyond the Codex! For 25 years, text has been central to Janis Nedela's work. Whether using collage, installation, painting or performance, it is the book as object and the manipulation of text that constantly inform his work. In this piece, Nedela has etched lines to configure the structure of the open book pages, each pair alluding to text on the printed page.

Josh Simpson, Planet
Josh Simpson finds artistic inspiration in his natural surroundings, and particularly in the images of earth from space taken by the early astronauts. The cores of his planets are full of bubbles and patterns that evoke unseen landscaprds and underwater worlds.

Please note that each Planet is unique. This paper weight will differ slightly from the one picture at left.

Tom Peterson, Afternoon Light
This framed, archival pigment print is a photograph of a vacan storefront on Orange Street in New Haven. It was taken in the late afternoon, with strong light.

Blinn Jacobs, Trading Fours #5
Blinn Jacobs is an abstract artist who received an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and has completed additional study at the Yale School of Art. The basis of her work is the dialogue between polygonal shaped canvases and the use of painterly interaction of color.

Susan E. Bender, Sidelight
This 20" x 28" archival pigment print photograph has been selected for inclusion in CAW's May 2011 juried exhibition, Seeing Seeing: Capturing a Moment. Susan is a member of CAW's board, one of this year's Gala chairs and a long-time student in the Photography Department. She exhibits widely.
