BOOK ARTS

Four Books and a Box BA01SP08
Instructor: Paulette Rosen
Tuesday evenings, 6:30-9:30 (March 18-May 27)
This class will introduce basic structures and techniques through the creation of 4 books: softcover pamphlet, hardcover pamphlet, notepad holder and hardcover perfect binding. If students have made these books before, there will be other options. The final project will be the construction of a clamshell box to hold the collection of books. Enrollment in this class includes one 3 hour monitored practice session a week. No bookbinding experience is necessary. Eleven sessions: $413; members: $372

The Casebound Book BA02SP08
Instructor: Paulette Rosen
Thursday morning, 9:30-12:30 (March 20-April 17)
This is the class for you if you want to make a “real” book. We will focus exclusively on making a casebound book with a hardcover, lots of pages sewn together and a rounded spine. We will begin with tearing and folding paper and end with an impressive book covered in cloth and decorative paper. Basic techniques will be covered in this class, so no experience is necessary. Because this class is only 5 sessions, attendance at each class is mandatory in order to complete the project. Enrollment in this class includes one 3 hour monitored practice session a week. Five sessions: $188; members: $169

Variations on the Case Binding BA03SP08
Instructor: Paulette Rosen
Thursday mornings, 9:30-12:30 (April 24-May 29)
In this class students will learn two advanced variations on the case binding. The first, called a simplified binding, is especially useful for thin books and involves covering the boards entirely before attaching them to a leather or cloth spine. The second, called a flat back case binding, is constructed of thick pages without sewing, leaving a continuous page across the gutter. Both structures are wonderful for artists’ books. The flatback case also works very well as a photo album. Bookbinding experience and knowing how to sew a case binding independently is required for this class. Experience working with leather is not required. Prerequisite: The Casebound Book or permission of the instructor. Six sessions: $226; members: $203

Advanced Hand Bookbinding BA04SP08
Instructor: Gisela Noack
Wednesday evenings, 7:00-10:00 (March 19-May 21)
Ten classroom sessions. Open to binders with two recent Basic Hand Bookbinding sessions or with permission of the instructor. Instruction is adjusted to the interest and binding skill of the individual. Open bench time available on Fridays during term. Enrollment in this class includes one 3 hour monitored practice session a week. Ten sessions: $376; members: $338

Open Bindery
Instructors: Studio Binders
Friday mornings, 10:00-1:00
Friday afternoons, 1:00-4:00
These are monitored sessions for the independent binder who has experience in the CAW Bindery. Fee includes materials for binding and use of the equipment in the Bindery, which includes board shears, a guillotine and a Quik Print Press for making labels. Students must be approved by an instructor to enroll. They must have adequate knowledge of the Bindery. There is no instruction provided. Note: there will be one Saturday per month during the session, date to be announced.  Sign up and payment is in advance at the CAW office. Cost per session: $15; members: $14

How to Make a Photograph Album BA05SP08w
Instructor: Barbara Mauriello
Saturday and Sunday, March 15 & 16, 10:00-4:00
There are three basic approaches to album making – and hundreds of variations–defined by the page format: an extended accordion, a stack of single sheets, or a set of folded sections. By keeping our models small, we will make prototypes of as many structures as time allows, with each participant selecting their favorites from among the possibilities presented. There will be much discussion on both the advantages and limitations of a given style. Variables as diverse as the number of photos to be bound, the size of a sheet of paper, and the availability of bookbinding equipment in the home studio will lead students towards specific models. The goal is not to produce a single, large album, but rather to understand and to play with the principles of album making. Please bring some (small!) photos with you on Saturday. Barbara Mauriello is a book artist who has a bookbinding studio in Hoboken, NJ. Barbara is the author of Making Memory Boxes. She is also a visiting instructor at the International Center of Photography, the Newark Museum, the Paper and Book Intensive and the Penland School of Crafts. Cost: $230; members: $207

Box of Fireworks BA08SP08w
Instructor: Paul Johnson
Thursday, July 17, 9:30-12:30
No one can create more surprises from a few pieces of paper than Paul Johnson. This class starts with participants making a paper origami box. Then you’ll construct an extending pop-up book that “grows” out of the box. As you lift the book, pages pop out from the sides like a pyrotechnic display! It’s great fun to make and, amazingly, required only paper, scissors and glue. A workshop of terrific fun. Enrollment limited to 10 students. Cost: $65; members: $59

Making Moveable Editions: Single Sheet Books BA09SP08w
Instructor: Paul Johnson
Friday, July 18, 10:00-4:00
The workshop begins with cutting out and assembling from a flat sheet one of Paul Johnson’s 90-degree pop up editioned books; we will then explore techniques and produce several models easily constructed from a photocopied base design. Finally, participants design a pop-up book on a single sheet of paper suitable for reproduction as an edition. This way, you can keep your original pop-up and give copies to friends as well! Enrollment limited to 10 students. Cost: $120; members: $108

Children’s Favorites: Books Kids Love to Make BA06SP08w
Instructor: Paul Johnson
Saturday, July 19, 10:00-4:00
With little more than scissors and glue, you and your students can make books to read, to view like a picture, to hold and explore like a sculpture, or to rearrange in a variety of 3D shapes. Expect to take away dozens of books models---integrating verbal and visual images and paper technology---that make learning fun for children. (Note: this workshop is especially geared for teachers). Enrollment limited to 15 students. Cost: $120; members: $108

The Magic of Moveable Books: Kids as Pop-up Engineers BA07SP08w
Instructor: Paul Johnson
Sunday, July 20, 10:00-4:00
Making moveable books with your students is the perfect way to unlock their verbal and visual ideas---and meet your classroom goals. Participants construct a range of moveable books and paper models, progressively combining them to end up with a book that might have pull-outs, lift-the-flap pages, pop-up units, removable parts and more! (Note: this workshop is especially geared for teachers). Enrollment limited to 15 students. Cost: $120; members: $108
