WORKSHOP

Special lecture/demonstration series presented in concert with the Bonsai Society of Greater New Haven

The Art of Bonsai: The Beauty of Miniature Trees DA04SP08w
Tuesday evening, May 13, 7:30-10:00
Join us for an evening lecture/demonstration with expert Jim Barrett and learn about Bonsai beauty, form and elegance. Then observe a master bonsai styling demonstration. Jim will be working on a live tree, transforming it from a nondescript shrub into a beginning bonsai.  A "Beginning Bonsai" is a freshly designed bonsai just starting on its life as a pampered bonsai. Jim Barrett resides at and runs a bonsai nursery in southern California and has been involved in bonsai since the early 1950’s when there was very little information or instruction available in this country. Mr. Barrett is a nationally recognized lecturer and workshop facilitator through the country and has co-founded several bonsai associations. He is past president of Bonsai Clubs International, the first president of Golden State Bonsai Federation, the founding president of the Santa Anita Bonsai Society and currently serves on the American Bonsai Society's board of directors. Always interested in ceramics, Jim has for the past three decades been making bonsai pots. Although known for his shohin and mini pots, his main interest lies in making large containers modeled after Japanese and Chinese-style pots. His awards include the first North American Juried Bonsai Pot Competition sponsored by The National Bonsai Foundation and Penjing Museum in Washington DC.  He was a featured potter at the 2005, Fifth World International Bonsai Convention Washington DC and was commissioned to create a special pot to commemorate the prestigious event. Jim’s pots are mostly hand built slab construction or mold-formed and are sought by bonsai owners and pot collectors world-wide.
Light refreshments will be served. Cost $30.00; members: $27.00

The Basic Techniques of Decorative Painting DA03SP08w
Instructor: Elizabeth Craft Peck
Saturday and Sunday, May 31-June 1, 10:00-4:00
In this hands-on workshop participants will learn the fundamental skills of decorative painting, specialty techniques and professional tips to create beautiful finishes that can be applied to many surfaces. Working directly on prepared sample boards, students come away with an array of successful examples of a broad range of painting methods and techniques. Marbles and gemstones techniques, from reality to fantasy, including porphyry, malachite, and tortoiseshell will also be explored. We will also practice the popular Venetian plaster effect, including preparing your own batch of plaster. A basic discussion of color and light will include color mixing, matching, and versatility. Elisabeth Craft Peck is a professional decorative painter and teacher specializing in faux finished, marble and gemstones and stenciling. She has taught numerous classes and workshops at the Boston and Cambridge Centers for Adult Education. She holds a BA from SUNY Potsdam, she also studied in Denmark.
