Color and Light in Watercolor    DP08SU13
This course is all about capturing vibrant, expressive color and light in your watercolor paintings. How do we perceive and react to color and light? The course begins with the basics of color and value, temperature, and intensity. The effects of light and shadow will be discussed to help guide decisions about what colors to use and where to place them in a design. We will look at some of the color palettes used by painters of the past, choose some of your own, and apply these ideas into your own personal and original form of expression. A materials list will be provided upon registration. Arches paper will be available for purchase in class. Prerequisite: some experience with watercolor. (No class July 4.)
Instructor: Lily Kok-Forbush

Seeing the Light    DP09SU13
An extension of basic drawing, this class begins by observing how light changes the appearance of things inside and out. Using creative set-ups and the interior and exterior of the building, create value studies in charcoal, Conté crayon and pencil and explore techniques for using them. See how light can be used to unify a drawing, enhance volume and create depth and atmosphere. Observe how tones crossover from one object or area to another and how they may be used as compositional elements. Learn how tones can invoke a mood when used expressively and by limiting the range used. Analyze planes and think abstractly about space. Please bring vine charcoal to the first class. Prerequisite: a beginning drawing class.

Daily Drawing: Creating the Habit of Art Every Day    DP11SU13
Kick-start your creativity by drawing every day. This group will investigate different themes, and drawing media for inspiration in making art a daily habit in your life. Our weekly meetings will focus on sharing what we’ve done in an informal group critique, provide a weekly list of “assignments,” and give you a chance to explore a range of drawing media and techniques: draw from life, from your imagination, collage daily found objects or journal. The group will have an optional online component as well, in the form of a Flickr group and or a blog to share our efforts with a larger community. Bring a drawing pad or paper to the first session. Formal training in drawing is not required; just bring your creativity and a willingness to experiment. A suggested materials list will be provided, but students should have a sketchbook dedicated to this project, small enough to carry with you at all times. (No class July 4.)

The Art of Black-and-White
DP27SU13W This two-day intensive workshop is an opportunity to think about both drawing and painting issues but without having to deal with all the issues of color. Set aside this special weekend to explore the dramatic potential of life as seen and imagined in black and white. Using only a variety of black-and-white media, from charcoal to ink and water-based paint, we will work from observation (still-life; room interiors; views from windows), as well as from photographs, and from imagination, to create tense, edgy, luscious work. We will work from huge to small, exploring dramatic angles of view, juxtapositions of scale, and a range from velvety grays to intense, sharp blacks. A materials list will be sent upon registration. Prior drawing and painting experience is recommended.
Instructor: Julia Rogoff
Saturday & Sunday, 10am - 5pm, June 8 - 9
Cost: $180; members: $162

Encaustic Collagraph
DP28SU13W
This workshop combines encaustic painting with printmaking by creating collagraph plates using wax to make the printable surface. History, safe practices and techniques will also be covered. Participants can experiment with inlaying and incising techniques to create texture and build their image on a re-useable Plexiglass plate which can then be inked using water-based inks and printed on a printing press. The possibilities of using encaustic for texture with printmaking are limitless; combining these two mediums will be an exciting artistic journey. This workshop is best suited for those with some experience with encaustic and printmaking with a press, but not required. $45 worth of materials supplied. A list of other materials needed will be sent upon registration.
Instructor: Binnie Birstein
Saturday & Sunday, 10am - 4pm, July 20 - 21

Landscape Collage
DP29SU13W
Through demonstrations and individual guidance, students of all levels will learn to use collage to explore the landscape. Discover the abstract character of landscape forms by transforming them into large shapes and simple color structures, working with collage elements such as papers, magazine clippings, fabrics, etc. The collage will be assembled and then painted into with color. We’ll work outside, plein air, at Edgerton Park unless the weather does not permit, in which case we will at CAW. Bring anything you want to use to make your painting experience more comfortable (chair, easel, hats, sun block, umbrella, etc.) and a packed lunch. A materials list will be provided upon registration.
Instructor: Steven DiGiovanni
