BASKETRY

Splint Style Baskets    FR01SP12
Classic Cherokee Patterns will be woven in traditional and contemporary style baskets during this session. Dyed and natural reed will be used. Some dyeing will take place in class. Open to all levels of experience - beginners welcome!

Ribbed Baskets    FR02SP12
Baskets woven with hoop and rib technique vary from classic Appalachian egg baskets to wall baskets with vine frames and asymmetric sculptures. Twining and round reed technique will be combined with splint style flat reed to create texture and design elements unique to each piece. Beginners welcome!

WEAVING

Floor Loom Weaving    FR03SP12
For beginners, learn the basics of preparing and operating a loom to weave a sampler combining many useful weaves then complete the term by planning and weaving one or two simple projects of their choice. For intermediate and advance students, individual guidance will be given to design and weave projects with more complex structures and use of multi harness looms. $12 materials fee for beginners only. Enrollment is limited to 14 students.

SEWING

Pattern-Making, Draping: The Fundamental Tools of Design
FR04SP12
In this course each student will learn the fundamentals of pattern-making and draping, through exercises in dart manipulation, slash and spread technique, grading and fitting. The students that complete this course will take with them the skill to create a garment from sketch to completion, through paper draft and first muslin samples. Students will construct variations on basic garments like the bodice, skirt, and sleeve to get a full understanding of how the pattern sloper works as the most important tool in the creative process. Price includes $40 materials fee. A general list of tools and supplies will be sent to students upon registration.

Fabric Painting and Printing Sampler

There are many techniques for applying imagery to fabric that can be used in sewing, quilting and fine art. This sampler will include demonstrations and hands-on activities encouraging participants to experiment with a variety of materials on different fabrics. Demonstrations will include a variety of surface design techniques including use of fabric paint, crayons, pencils, ink, stamping, hand stenciling and resist. Come to play and be inspired. No experience necessary.

Introduction to Textile Paints

In this two-day workshop, students will be introduced to the many varied ways that textile paints can be used to create imagery on fabric. Students will be exposed to a variety of samples and tools and will be given the opportunity to try as many as there is time for. Examples include direct painting, water-soluble gutta resist, silk screen printing, stamping, stenciling and more. All paints and tools provided. Students should bring approximately four or five yards of fabric. A variety of natural fibers are best such as silk habotai (China silk), silk crepe de chine, pima cotton, cotton broadcloth etc.

Hand Felted Wool Vessels

Hand felted wool vessels express the spirit of your creativity. Discover a variety of techniques to craft beautiful three-dimensional wool vessels using resist and origami techniques. Expect this magical fiber to lead you to make unexpectedly wonderful discoveries! Please bring four towels, scissors and any favorite scraps of yarn or fabric. All other supplies and tools provided by the instructor.
