Charcoal, pastel and ink are too messy for home, but are perfect materials at CAW. With messy media you will have fun with color and shape when you smear, blend, splatter, scrape, drip, print and collage to make unique drawings of people, places and things.

Make jewelry and mini sculpture with copper sheet metal and wire to wear or hang. Stamp, fold, hammer, bend, cut, twist and even heat metal to create pendants, medallions and forms from nature such as pea pods and leaves. Students will explore using basic hand tools, especially hammers, mallets, cutters, files, pliers and torches (one-on-one with instructor) to create works in metal.

Create a series of bowls, mugs and vases on the wheel in CAW’s pottery studio. Freedom and independent study are at the core of this class as young artists learn to navigate the studio and follow their work from throwing to glazing. Ultimate Mâché YP14FA10
Papier-mâché has been in use for 2,000 years for making masks, decorations, tables, chairs, trays, animals, insects and anatomical models! This class will explore these uses for papier-mâché and more; from large to micro size! A little bit sloppy and slimy. Projects include a Venetian carnival mask, piñata, calacas (skeleton characters from Mexico), animals, beads and a jack-o’-lantern.

Cartooning the EZ Way YP18FA10
Using simplified drawing methods consisting of lines and circles, discover how easy it is to draw all sorts of cartoon images: cars, superheroes, super villains, hip-hop/urban-street designs, animals, creatures, dragons, and whatever else your imagination can conjure up. The class focuses on the individual student and developing what he or she likes to draw. Whether beginner or advanced, there will be something for everyone with the desire to draw and learn in a fun, stress-free and diverse environment.

This class focuses on both technical and artistic aspects of photography. Students will learn camera operations and darkroom techniques. We will discuss lighting, composition and the unique creative possibilities of photography. A 35mm manual camera is preferred. Students need to purchase film and paper. Fine for beginners and experienced students.

Teen Digital Photo YP20FA10
Step out of the darkroom and into the world of color photography and desktop printing. This is an introductory class on digital photography for interested amateurs who want to improve their photographic skills, as well as serious artists excited to explore new photographic technology. We will cover camera basics, file formats, and digital printing. Students will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to crop, tone and improve their pictures just like professional photographers. A digital camera is required (advice on buying a digital camera is available); a home computer and desktop printer recommended.

Canvas & Sketchbook: The Essentials YP21FA10
Paint on paper, canvas paper and learn to stretch and prime a canvas. Using acrylic paint, we will find out about color mixing and intensifying visual interest by cropping compositions. We will also use a sketchbook as to collect ideas for paintings. Students at all levels will enjoy this class, which takes into consideration students’ previous experience and interests.

Teen Clay YP22FA10
This class is an exploratory survey of sculptural and pottery forms and techniques, including hand-building, wheel-throwing, slip decoration, and glazing. Open to beginning and continuing students, with work adapted to each student’s interests. Students may elect to create high-fired works for which there will be an additional charge of $2.00 per pound for each fired item.

Portfolio Development for Young Artists YP23FA10
This class is designed for the serious high school student who is ready to develop an art portfolio for college admissions to an art program or for personal enrichment. In a portfolio, both breadth and specialization within the fine arts must be established. In this course, each student’s strengths will be assessed from their current collection of work. In addition, students will be able to add in-depth drawing, monoprinting, bookbinding and three dimensional works to round out their portfolio. Students will leave class with a digital portfolio of their best work. Price includes $25 lab fee.

Classes meet weekly. Beginning and ending dates are noted with each course description. There will be no class on Monday, July 5, 2010.
Each child's readiness is more important than the age guidelines noted. Call if you wish to discuss the level of work in any class.
Material costs are included in class fees.
Old clothes or a smock are strongly recommended.
Only registered students can attend classes.
Please enroll by June 14. You may enroll after this date, but early enrollment is encouraged due to limited class size. You can register NOW by mail or online. Mailed applications and enrollments will be processed in the order they are received according to the postmark. You may also register in person at the CAW office between 9 and 5, Monday through Friday.
Please note that your place in a class is secured with the receipt of your payment.
All classes have limited enrollment.
The decision to cancel a class which does not meet its required minimum enrollment is made about one week before the class begins.
Students are only notified if a class is full or cancelled. If you would like confirmation of your registration, please send a stamped self-addressed envelope.
