The wonders of spring - raindrops, birds/eggs/nests, buds, flowers, trees, bugs and baby animals will motivate projects. Explore painting, cutting and pasting, clay and dough, collage, puppets and simple constructions. Bring a favorite spring storybook to share. Fosters visual literacy, creativity, motor and cognitive skills.

This class is for young artists who want to continue to explore and create together with a parent/adult. Plant the seeds of creativity! Create a garden of projects in drawing, painting, collage and sculpture. Explore clay, tempera and watercolor paint, papier-mâché, puppets, and mixed media. Projects will be inspired by spring colors found in animals, rain, buds and trees, gardens and flowers, bugs and butterflies - as well as children's imaginations and individual expression. Builds motor and cognitive skills; fosters creativity and problem-solving. Please note, this class is for young artists who are ready to work independently.

Sew a Sock Bunny YP01SP12
Sock creatures have origins in Victorian times; became very popular in the thrifty 1930's, again in the 1950's, and are a great eco project today. Learn to cut, sew and stuff a little bunny. Explore texture and form. Embellish with buttons, yarn, felt, fabric. Simple hand sewing taught; instructor will provide machine sewing. Promotes motor skills, tactile learning and creativity.

Clay Springtime Animals YP02SP12
Which animals are born in spring in the Northeast and why? Learn about this, and how to sculpt clay to create your own favorite spring baby animals: birds, chicks, fawns, foals, lambs, bunnies etc., which will be fired in our kiln and then painted. Learn about clay hand-building techniques, form and balance, and impressing texture. Children can also create a little habitat for creatures, and make an art book about them. Builds motor skills and literacy; fosters creativity and problem-solving; cross-connections to nature science.

Exploring Drawing plus Painting YP08SP12
Learn about line, shape, form, color mixing and brush handling. Explore techniques for drawing with pencils, oil pastels, charcoal and chalk pastels, plus painting with tempera, watercolor and ink. Children will work from observation and their imaginations, inspired by scenery, flowers and natural forms, animals, people and personal experiences. They will make a sketchbook and a portfolio to hold artwork. New projects for continuing students. Promotes creativity and visual literacy.

Clay Play YP09SP12
What can you make with a lump of clay? So many wonderful, imaginative things! Learn clay hand-building techniques including pinch, coil and slab methods. Explore form, texture and design. Creative projects include pots, fantasy castles, wind chimes, zany cool creatures, characters from favorite books, movies or games, and a house/habitat for a pet/animal. Try out ideas from your imagination, too. Some pieces will be fired, and you will also learn glazing techniques. Builds motor skills; problem-solving.

Springtime Mixed Media YP10SP12
This is a great class for students who enjoy creating detailed art projects. Creative projects from combinations of various materials: sculpture from natural and found objects, drawings and paintings using oil crayons, chalk pastels and watercolors; spinning mobiles, animals, dioramas of fantasy places and more. Experiment with cool materials such as colorful tissue paper, wire, cardboard, foil, feathers, glitter, beads etc. Be inspired by seasonal colors, birds, trees, animals, and non-denominational spring celebrations. Includes new projects for continuing students. Fosters fine motor skills and creativity.

Matter Matters YP11SP12
Create art with materials too messy to use at home. We will explore two-dimensional and three-dimensional working methods using a variety of materials. Projects include plaster sculpture, pastel painting, paper marbling, mono-prints, sand casting and paste paper painting. These materials are tactile and direct, and the results can be unpredictable and a delight to the senses. Builds motor skills, problem solving and imagination.

Spring into Painting YP12SP12
Create artwork on paper using tempera and watercolor paint, oil pastel, markers and ink. In addition to painting on rectangles of paper, we will experiment with shaped, folded, cut and sculpted painted paper. Celebrate spring with themes such as rain, wind, mud, bugs, buds, blooms, umbrellas, kites and sun. We will sharpen observational skills and tap into our imagination.

The sky is the limit when it comes to imagination. Let's pinch, pull, press and play with clay! Fun with Metal YP14SP12
Make jewelry and mini-sculpture with copper sheet metal and wire to wear or hang. Stamp, fold, hammer, bend, cut, twist and even heat metal to create pendants, medallions and forms from nature such as pea pods and leaves. Students will explore using basic hand tools, especially hammers, mallets, cutters, files, pliers and torches (one-on-one with instructor) to create works in metal.

Junior Potters on the Wheel YP15SP12
Cups and mugs, bowls and plates, pottery are loads of fun to create! From the wheel to the table, Junior Potters wedge, throw, trim and glaze unique works of utilitarian art. Instruction will be given to each student at her or his level of experience. Come cover your hands in clay in CAW's pottery studio. Both new and returning students are welcome.

Anime-Manga Drawing YP16SP12
Learn how to draw and perfect the expressive faces and dynamic poses of Japanese cartoon characters. We will even make characters of ourselves! Step by step, students will be able to take pencil sketches and make them into finished colored pencil and marker drawings that are truly original. 日本製アニメとの楽しみを持ちなさい!! (Have fun with Anime!). Passion for Fashion Sketching YP17SP12
In this introduction to fashion illustration, students will look at a variety of examples of the fashion figure and develop and refine a personal style. Using markers and colored pencils, we will experiment with shape and color and learn how to make different textile textures and patterns. With the focus of fun, creativity and personal style, students will create a portfolio of fashion sketches for all occasions and seasons.

Metal Sculpture and Jewelry YP18SP12
Explore the various techniques of jewelry making and metal arts using non-precious materials. Students can acquire the skills of metal craft in these classes that combine projects, demonstrations and independent guidance by the instructor. Students use basic hand tools such as hammers, mallets, cutters, files, pliers and torches to develop projects in metal. Create nature forms, mini-sculptures and basic jewelry forms with copper sheet metal and wire. Teens welcome.

Cartooning the EZ Way YP19SP12
Using simplified drawing methods consisting of lines and circles, discover how easy it is to draw all sorts of cartoon images: cars, superheroes, super villains, hip-hop/urban-street designs, animals, creatures, dragons, and whatever else your imagination can conjure up. The class focuses on individual students and developing what they like to draw. Whether beginner or advanced, there will be something for everyone with the desire to draw and learn in a fun, stress-free and diverse environment.

This is a perfect class for students who would like to develop a strong skill set in drawing and painting. Teen Digital Photography YP21SP12
Step out of the darkroom and into the world of color photography and desktop printing. This is an introductory class on digital photography for interested amateurs who want to improve their photographic skills, as well as serious artists excited to explore new photographic technology. We will cover camera basics, file formats and digital printing. Students will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to crop, tone and improve their pictures just like professional photographers. A digital camera is required (advice on buying a digital camera is available); a home computer and desktop printer recommended.

Observational Drawings: A Must for Your Portfolio YP22SP12
Colleges and art schools look for prospective students' ability to translate the three-dimensional world into two-dimensions. In this class, learn a classical way of seeing and create drawings for your portfolio using edges, contour, size, contrast, perspective, shading, negative space, color, texture and line variation. Outside assignments include self-portraits, object studies, still-lifes, and interior scenes. Newsprint paper provided.

Teen Darkroom Photography YP23SP12
This class will introduce the basic technical and artistic elements of photography. Every student will learn how to use a manual camera and the fundamentals of processing film and making prints. We will discuss the importance of lighting, composition and the unique creative possibilities of photography. For new and returning students. A 35mm manual camera is preferred and students will need to supply film and paper.

Not Your Standard Still Life YP24SP12
The media and techniques of this class are traditional, pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, tempera and acrylic. The difference is in the representation of objects, portraits and landscape. We will turn convention on its head. Break free of the norm and really flex your imagination. Lower your artistic inhibitions and venture into the contemporary, experimental and previously unknown territory.

Teen Clay YP25SP12
In this class, teens learn to create personal, unique pottery starting from raw clay using both hand-building and the potter's wheel. Class demonstrations with additional one-on-one instruction allow each student to learn at their own pace. Students are encouraged to develop personal ideas into their own ceramic wonders. Open to both beginners and continuing students. Cost includes clay and firing fees.

Classes meet weekly. Beginning and ending dates are noted with each course description.
Each child's readiness is more important than the age guidelines noted. Call if you wish to discuss the level of work in any class.
Material costs are included in class fees.
Old clothes or a smock are strongly recommended.
Only registered students can attend classes.
We encourage you to enroll by March 5. You may enroll after this date, but early enrollment is encouraged due to limited class size. You can register NOW by mail or online. Mailed applications and enrollments will be processed in the order they are received according to the postmark. You may also register in person at the CAW office between 9 and 5, Monday through Friday.
Please note that your place in a class is secured with the receipt of your payment.
All classes have limited enrollment.
The decision to cancel a class which does not meet its required minimum enrollment is made about one week before the class begins.
Students are only notified if a class is full or cancelled. If you would like confirmation of your registration, please send a stamped self-addressed envelope.
