PROGRAM
Adventures in Art is a series of one-week sessions
in which students can explore painting, drawing, clay, and more.
There are programs for 4-6 year olds, young people entering 2nd
-5th grades, and 6th-8th graders. Note that our Adventure
in Art programs have increased to eight weeks!
Summer Art Classes are
offered for young people ages two through teens. Classes
meet once, twice or three times a week for 3-6 or more sessions
during the summer. Students may enjoy attending one or more
Adventures in Art programs as well as taking an art class during
our summer program.

broad themes. Students are encouraged to observe and interpret
the world around them with imagination and individual expression.
We will also explore the work of at least one artist every week.

will focus on hand building techniques and also have a spin on
the pottery wheel. We will create many fun pieces using coils,
slab and pinch methods. Students will glaze pieces and they will

note that working in clay takes drying and firing time. There

FOLK ARTS OF RUSSIA YP28SU08

Be a Russian folk artist for a week! Hugely popular last summer,
we bring you new projects. Folk art in Russia decorates homes
and every day objects. Ideas from nature especially trees are
used by woodcarvers, painters, weavers, potters, and makers of
ingenious toys. Using paint, wood, clay, aluminum, paper maché and
cloth we will make objects such as a decorated box, toys, cloth,
plates other items found in a Russian folk home. Four sessions:

Three fabulously fun materials come together in a variety of
sculpture projects big and small. We will twist and weave to
make animal sculptures, build and paint a paper maché Koshare “clown” Kachina,
make a wire mobile, blend and splatter with paint and more. Eye
protection for wire handling provided, however, you may bring

Take an imaginary grand tour of the arts and culture of Italy.
From the mask traditions of Venice to the frescoes of Rome, let

Who would think that rocks really rock? You can paint them and
paint on them, arrange them in patterns, press them into plaster,
use them in sculptures, draw and collage their shapes with fascinating
colors and iridescence. We will learn about and make Chinese
Scholar rocks thought to be like landscapes. We will also create
petroglyphs and pictographs. Five sessions: $289; members:

Just how did Vermeer paint such perfect perspective? How are
three-dimensional effects created, folds in fabric, reflections
in glass, the tiniest detail achieved? Did you know that Constable
built little scenes to paint and used broccoli for trees? We
will try many of the methods of the Masters. Will they work for

All through time, people have tried to improve and elaborate
upon their appearance and we will do the same by painting, sculpting,
using paper maché, beads and other materials. We will
explore armor from Japan and Europe and jewelry from Egypt and
Aztec Mexico, as well as decoration direct from our imagination.

Make a soft doll, for keeping or giving. Students will design,
sew and stuff a soft doll from cotton, yarn and other materials.
It can be sweet, homely, silly, funky. Some hand stitches
will be taught, and some machine-sewing will be completed by
instructor. The doll will be ready to take home by the last class.
No previous sewing experience necessary. Limit eight

The idea is to make art from many small parts and there are endless
ways to do that. Collage, three-dimensional collage cubes, Japanese
Washi eggs, paper mosaic, sculptures made of wood pieces and
other small objects, prints composed of many small prints creating
patterns, collections of similarly colored bits and pieces in
a shadow box and art made by joining many of the same thing such
as a sculpture made from painted clothespins are some of the

Sketch and paint in the legendary Moleskine® notebook used
for the past two centuries by great artists and thinkers, including
Van Gogh, Picasso and Hemingway. Take it wherever you travel,
around town or places exotic. Techniques, tips and practice in
using a watercolor pocket sketchbook en plein air. Sketchbook

This class will introduce the basic technical and artistic elements
of photography. Every student will earn how to use a manual camera,
the fundamentals of processing film, and making prints. We will
discuss the importance of lighting, composition and the unique
creative possibilities of photography. A 35mm manual type
camera is preferred. Students will need to purchase film and
paper. For new and continuing students. This class is limited

Tuesday evenings, 5:00-7:00 (June 17-July22)
Step out of the darkroom into the world of color photography
and desktop printing. This is a class for beginning and intermediate
level students who wish to explore new photographic technology.
We will cover camera basics, file formats, and digital printing.
Students will be introduced to Adobe Photoshop to crop, tone
and improve their pictures just like professional photographers
and artists. A digital camera is required; a
home computer and desktop printer is recommended. Note:
This class will be held at the Educational Center for the Arts.

Thursday evenings, 5:00-7:00 (June 19-July 24)
An exploratory survey of sculptural and pottery forms and techniques,
including hand-building and wheel-throwing, slip decoration,
and glazing. Open to beginning and continuing students, with
work adapted to each student’s interest. Students may elect
to create high-fired works for which there will be an additional
charge of $2.00 per pound for each item fired. Six sessions:

Wednesday afternoons, 4:00-6:00 (June 18-July 23)
This course will be an introduction as well as a continuation
for those teens with some drawing and watercolor experience.
We will focus on composition, perspective and proportion. Attention
will be given to the development of ideas, style and expression.
We will study images and color through landscape, still life
and figure drawing. We will discuss materials, techniques, composition,
and the effects of light and shadow on color. Weather permitting,
