New Explorers: Discover Art YP01SU13
This is a playful class for two and three year olds accompanied by an adult. Enjoy exploring art together, working at child’s level, inspired by summer colors, themes and celebrations. Little fingers will discover many different materials to help develop motor skills and imaginations—painting, clay, collage and making simple constructions. Doing art helps build visual literacy and creativity.

Art Together: Making Mini Masterpieces YP02SU13
This is a great class for children who want to continue working on art together with a parent/adult caregiver. Children will build visual literacy and creativity, as well as motor and problem-solving skills, as we explore painting, clay, puppets, collage and construction. Inspiration includes summer colors and themes— sun, sand, sea, water, sand, fish, seashore and more.

Giant Flowers and Plants YP23SP13
It is spring and everything is blooming! Create fun, wildly imaginative, colorful, oversize 2-D and 3-D flora from colored paper, cardstock, tissue paper, dowels, and decorative materials. Explore proportion, color, shape and design. Fosters original and creative thinking; cross-connections to plant science and nature.

Sock Critters YP24SP13
Create simple, fun and unique creatures from your imagination. Learn to sew and stuff sock creations, and then embellish them inventively with google eyes, buttons, yarn, felt, fluff etc. Simple hand sewing will be taught for those who want to sew, or hot glue and tacky glue can be used. This is a great eco project. Promotes motor skills, tactile learning and creativity.

Giant Papier-Mâché Food! YP25SP13
Get inspired by Claes Oldenberg’s oversize pop art sculptures of food. Create giant food sculpture using cardboard, newspaper and papier-mâché. Paint and decorate your foods creatively with pom-poms, tissue, glitter, etc. Explore proportion, color, shape and design.

Learn about lines, shapes, patterns and colors as you enjoy sketching, printing and painting in a supportive, creative atmosphere. Explore different techniques and materials including pencils, pastels, paints and ink. Discover tips on color-mixing and handling brushes and paint. Create prints by stamping and monoprinting. We will work from both imagination and observation. There will be new projects for continuing students. This class promotes visual literacy and creativity and builds art and motor skills.

Clay Play YP06SU13
Explore the many creative possibilities of clay while you work in our pottery studio. Squish, bend, pinch, roll, and join! Lessons include coil, pinch, and slab hand-building techniques, clay construction, and texture, form and design. Create pots, animals, bugs, sandcastles, plus ideas from your imagination. Glazing techniques will be introduced, and some pieces will be fired in our kiln. Working with clay builds manual and fine motor skills and promotes creative thinking and problem-solving.

Mixed-Media Art of the Imagination YP07SU13
A great class for children who love working with detail and design. Draw, paint, and create collages, constructions and habitats, masks and mobiles, inspired by summer themes and your imagination! Build with cardboard, clay, wire, and wood, and embellish with various materials of your choice, including natural objects such as sand and seashells plus tissue paper, glitter, pom-poms, cellophane and more. Nature Sightings YP09SU13
Birds, butterflies, bugs, snakes, animals, trees and flowers will inhabit our creations as we draw outdoors around CAW and at the Peabody Museum. Using our drawings, we will create inventive sculpture using cardboard, paint, drawing materials, collage, mixed media and printmaking. Projects include a tiny world diorama, dimensional painting and freestanding sculpture. The class develops art and natural science awareness, builds art and design skills, and encourages young artists to explore a variety of media.

Hooray for Clay YP10SU13
Get excited to create with clay! Inspired by familiar and experimental art, as well as one another, students will imaginatively design, build and glaze vessels, figures and sculptures. Projects include sculpting silly or life-like circus animals, slab-built buildings, coil-building visionary vessels and more. Instruction focuses on creative hand-building; does not include use of the wheel. For new as well as continuing students.

Fun with Metal YP11SU13
Make jewelry and mini-sculpture with copper sheet metal and wire to wear or hang. Stamp, fold, hammer, bend, cut, twist and even heat metal to create pendants, medallions and forms from nature such as pea pods and leaves. Students will explore using basic hand tools, especially hammers, mallets, cutters, files, pliers and torches (one-on-one with instructor) to create works in metal. (No class July 4.)

Junior Potters on the Wheel YP12SU13
Cups and mugs, bowls and plates, pottery are loads of fun to create! From the wheel to the table, Junior Potters wedge, throw, trim and glaze unique works of utilitarian art. Instruction will be given to each student at her or his level of experience. Come get your hands in clay in CAW’s pottery studio. Both new and returning students are welcome.

Find Out About Fiber Art YP13SU13
Fabric and fiber are the media for design and expression in this class. Students will have fun experiences handling, exploring, inventing, constructing and designing with this media. We will explore textile’s variety in color, richness and feel. Students will create art using a variety of processes such as working with felted wool, soft sculpture, string painting, wall hanging and glue batik. We will learn the basics of weaving with different fibers on cardboard looms and hula-hoops! No prior experience is necessary.

Draw and Paint A Plein Air YP14SU13
Summer is the perfect time to work outdoors, a plein air. Develop drawing, painting, and observational skills by sketching trees, flowers and architecture around us. Study shadows and changes of color under the sky, explore the neighborhood around CAW and Edgerton Park and learn to incorporate your studies into creative compositions. We will use pencil, charcoal, soft pastel, tempera and watercolor. The class develops art and natural science consciousness, builds basic to intermediate art and design skills, and encourages young artists to explore a variety of drawing and painting media. (No class July 4.)

Metal Sculpture and Jewelry YP15SU13
Explore jewelry making and metal arts using non-precious materials. Students can acquire the skills of metal craft through a combination of projects, demonstrations and independent guidance by the instructor. Students use basic hand tools such as hammers, cutters, files, pliers and torches to develop projects. Create mini sculptures and basic jewelry forms with copper sheet metal and wire. Teens welcome. Cartooning the EZ Way YP16SU13
Using simplified drawing methods consisting of lines and circles, discover how easy it is to draw all sorts of cartoon images: cars, superheroes, super villains, hip-hop/urban-street designs, animals, creatures, dragons, and whatever else your imagination can conjure up. The class focuses on individual students and developing what they like to draw. Whether beginner or advanced, there will be something for everyone with the desire to draw and learn in a fun, stress-free and diverse environment.

Teen Darkroom Photography YP17SU13
This class will introduce the basic technical and artistic elements of photography. Every student will learn how to use a manual camera and the fundamentals of processing film and making prints. We will discuss lighting, composition and the unique creative possibilities of photography. For new and returning students. A 35mm manual camera is preferred and students will need to supply film and paper. (No class July 1.)

Low-Tech Printmaking for Teens YP18SU13
Explore the basics of low-tech printmaking and investigate processes that can be done without the use of a printmaking press. We will cover a variety of easy techniques to make multiple images, including transfers, scanning, linoleum-cuts, stenciling, cardboard plates, rubber stamping, and monotype. Students will be encouraged to hand-color or add to their prints. We will also experiment with incorporating drawing, painting, photography, bookmaking and collage into our prints. The class focus is on form and content, with less emphasis on complicated techniques. Finding out how print and multiples can “shape” art is our primary quest.

Teen Drawing and Watercolor YP19SU13
Young artists are provided with the fundamentals of drawing and watercolor painting with a focus on color. Projects utilize a rich array of drawing materials plus watercolor pencil and liquid, pan and tube watercolor. We will build and expand on traditional subject matter: still life, landscape, cityscape and portrait, both observational and abstract. We will discuss materials, techniques, composition, and the effects of light and shadow on color. Weather permitting, we will work outdoors. Individual expression encouraged. The course is ideal for students at all levels who want to further their experiences in drawing and watercolor painting.

Fun with Photoshop YP20SU13
Imagine if Salvador Dali had a program like Photoshop. Students will cover the basics of Adobe Photoshop while being assigned a series of creative out-of-the-box exercises each week. Each assignment will focus on a variety of Photoshop editing techniques while creating dynamic compositions using concepts like photomontage, among others, to alter reality. Mastery of Photoshop’s traditional function as a tool of visual enhancement will be covered and provide a basis to explore some of the software’s more obscure and exciting functions. Students are required to have a digital camera, paper and a thumb drive to save their projects. A home computer and printer access is recommended.

Teen Clay YP21SU13
In this class, teens learn to create personal, unique pottery starting from raw clay using both hand-building and the potter’s wheel. Class demonstrations with additional one-on-one instruction allow each student to learn at their own pace. Students are encouraged to develop personal ideas into their own ceramic wonders. Open to both beginners and continuing students. Cost includes $24 for clay and firing fees. (No class July 4.)

Only registered students can attend classes.
We encourage you to enroll by June 10. You may enroll after this date, but early enrollment is encouraged due to limited class size. You can register NOW by mail or on our website (www.creativeartsworkshop.org). You may also register by telephone or in person at CAW between 9 and 5, Monday through Friday.
A $3.00 handling fee will be applied to each registration.
Please note that your place in a class is secured with the receipt of your payment.
All classes have limited enrollment.
The decision to cancel a class which does not meet its required minimum enrollment is made about one week before the class begins.
