Creative Arts Workshop is proud to present
the winners of the 2005 national juried exhibition Close
to Home, juried by Jacquelyn D. Serwer, Chief Curator,
Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Recent work by photographer
Isabel Chenoweth (Hamden, CT) and painter Isabella Natale (New
York, NY) will be exhibited in the Hilles Gallery from January
6 to January 27, 2006, with an opening reception on Friday, January
6, 5-7pm. The artists will give special artist talks as part of
CAW’s I Break for Art! lecture
series on Wednesday, January 18, 12 noon (snow date January 25).
Isabel Chenoweth will share work from two
recent projects. Over the past two years, Chenoweth has photographed
urban parks and playgrounds to examine how diverse communities
use public spaces. She did a similar visual study at a different
kind of park – the ballpark – while attending the
Little League World Series in August 2005. The work she has selected
for this exhibition documents the way groups and crowds of people
from different cultural backgrounds experience particular spaces
and engage with each other and their environment.
While Chenoweth focuses on social aspects
of our culture, Isabella Natale draws inspiration from American
political culture. Her paintings use humor to address a wide range
of political and topical issues. She cleverly incorporates icons
of popular culture to convey “an absurd extension of the
familiar.” She transforms images that range from brand name
products like Johnson & Johnson dental floss and Ronzoni pasta
to Pez dispensers and movie posters into commentary on Enron,
President Bush, Karl Rove and others.
This exhibition is sponsored by
People's Bank.
