From the Director
Inventive Structures: Books beyond the Codex is Creative Arts Workshop’s juried exhibition for 2010. We are pleased to have Hedi Kyle serving as juror. Ms. Kyle is an internationally recognized book artist and conservator known for her innovation in developing new and unusual methods of binding books. Her in depth selections for Inventive Structures have created a unique exhibition like no other.
We are excited that this is CAW’s first international juried exhibition, with entries from the United States and five other countries. The exhibition drew in a great amount of interest with more than 110 artists submitting over 170 entries. The selection process was a tremendous undertaking with a vast range of possibilities. We extend our thanks to Ms. Kyle for all the time and dedication she gave to create this compelling exhibition.
We thank all the artists who submitted work. It is from their art and innovative ideas that this exhibition has emerged, for some viewers redefining what is meant by a book. Ms. Kyle selected the work of 65 artists to be included in Inventive Structures.
We thank Paulette Rosen, a CAW faculty member and co-chair of the Book Arts Department and Tricia Baum, Gallery Coordinator, for the time they spent on organizing this exhibition. Their hard work behind the scenes helped make this show a success, allowing it to enrich the artistic experiences available to the New Haven community.
