JURIED SHOW 2007

2007 National Juried Show:
Ceramic Abstraction:
Exploration & Evidence

Juror: Paula Winokur

March 30 - May 4, 2007
Opening Reception: March 30, 5:30 - 7:30 pm

The emphasis of Ceramic Abstraction is on the clay material – by nature, an elemental substance inherently capable of abstraction – and the invention and possibilities that occur within the field.  The material is not only explored in the traditional sense – using a variety of clays, glazes, and firing temperatures – but also by the concepts and ideas beyond the ordinary.  As Winokur noted, “There seem to be no boundaries that cannot be investigated.”

Ceramic Abstraction presents fifty nine pieces ranging from the minimal to the highly expressionistic and from small objects to large installations.  Included are works on the floor, the wall, the pedestal, and even hanging from the ceiling.

Creative Arts Workshop holds a national juried exhibition each year to showcase the work of emerging and established artists from across the nation, highlighting its mission of fostering creativity through participation in and appreciation of the visual arts.

About the juror:
Paula Winokur has received international acclaim for her contributions to the field of ceramics.  Inspired by geological phenomena that embody and describe her own work, Winokur has exhibited internationally since the early 1970s and her work is included in major public and private collections worldwide including the World Ceramics Collection, Korea; Jingdezhen Ceramic Art Institute, China; LA County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; and Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Museum, Washington D.C.  Her numerous awards include the Visual Arts Fellowships in l976 and l988 from the National Endowment for the Arts, and Pennsylvania Council for the Arts Craftsmen’s Fellowship in 1986 and 2005.  Winokur studied ceramics at the Tyler School of Art of Temple University under Rudolf Staffel and served as professor of ceramics at Arcadia University from 1973 to her retirement in 2003.
